Batman is a 1989 superhero film directed by Tim Burton from a screenplay by Sam Hamm and Warren Skaaren. Based on the DC Comics character Batman, it is the first installment of the initial Batman film series (1989–1997). An ensemble cast includes Jack Nicholson, Michael Keaton, Kim Basinger, Robert Wuhl, Pat Hingle, Billy Dee Williams, Michael Gough, and Jack Palance. The plot follows the title character (Keaton) as he begins his war on crime in Gotham City as a vigilante, with his first major enemy being Jack Napier (Nicholson), a criminal who transforms into the clownishly homicidal Joker.
